Tomorrow at 7 pm, February 1, 2024, Claudia Lane will present ‘The Evolution of Botanical Art’ to members and guests of the Nature Artists’ Guild.

In other Nature Artists’ Guild news –

The Guild is now accepting reservations for the limited spots available at the upcoming paint-out at Orchids by Hausermann on the morning of February 8, 2024 from 7:30 to 10. This paint-out starts early so that participating artists can enjoy the greenhouse before the display area opens to the public for the day. Interested members can register here or contact Celia Rodee to be added to the email list for updates and details.

Guild members who would like to contribute artwork images for the Spring Quarterly can do so by February 3. An email sent to members on January 26 has all the details.

The Nature Artists’ Guild continues to welcome new and returning members for 2024. Interested artists can join online or by mail (more details here) and be eligible to receive a prospectus (to be emailed late next month) for the upcoming Spring Nature Art Exhibit at The Morton Arboretum.

‘Field’ Trip for the Nature Artists’ Guild on January 31, 2024

Members of the Nature Artists’ Guild are heading back to the world-renowned Field Museum to draw and paint.

Nearly everyone who grew up in Chicago or its suburbs will remember the excitement of boarding a big yellow bus with their classmates and eventually spilling out to skip up those impressive steps to the entrance of the Field Museum. First, the awe of the Stanley Field Hall. Then, the treasures, large and small. The dinosaurs! The gems! The mummies! The elephants! The dioramas! Where to begin?

At 9:30 on the morning of Wednesday, January 31, 2024, members of the Nature Artists’ Guild will be revisiting the wonders that the Field Museum, one of the world’s largest museums of natural history, has to offer. At this paint-in, members will probably spend most of their time drawing or painting in the quiet corners of the dioramas (click here for a short video of Artist-in-Residence and friend of the Guild, Peggy Macnamara, doing just that). But the other artifacts are still there, along with many new and modern attractions, for visitors to enjoy after the sketching is done.

Members of the Nature Artists’ Guild recently received an email with details about meeting at the museum. Admission will be free on this day, but members will have to arrange for their own transportation, and there will be a fee for parking. Those who would like to attend can register here by January 28 to learn more and receive email updates from Paint-Out Coordinator Celia Rodee.

Claudia Lane presents the ‘The Evolution of Botanical Art’ on February 1, 2024

Botanical Art combines scientific observation and artistic expression. As a member of the Board of the American Society of Botanical Art, which has a membership of approximately 1850 botanical artists from all over the world, I do my best to promote this genre of art. – Claudia Lane

The Nature Artists’ Guild of The Morton Arboretum is pleased to sponsor The Evolution of Botanical Art, an online presentation featuring Claudia Lane on February 1, 2024 at 7 pm.

Claudia Lane currently teaches classes in color pencil and pen and ink for the Botanical Art Certificate Program at the Chicago Botanic Garden, while also serving on the board of the American Society of Botanical Art. Her wonderful work has toured the country with various traveling exhibitions.

Claudia’s personal artistic experiences, along with her involvement in the world of Botanical Art, have given her unique insights into its history and evolution to share with viewers in what promises to be an interesting and enjoyable evening.

This event will available live online to all (no recordings will be made). All members of the Nature Artists’ Guild will be emailed a link shortly before February 1, and non-members can request a link by clicking here.

Update – Links for the presentation were emailed to members and guests on January 25. Requests for a link will be accepted through January 30.

Nature Artists’ Guild Exhibit at the Downers Grove Library through January 28, 2024

The special exhibit by members of the Nature Artists’ Guild of The Morton Arboretum is now open at the Downers Grove Public Library.

Nature Artists’ Guild members have filled the walls of the library’s exhibit area with works celebrating nature in a variety of media, sizes, styles, and subjects. Large multi-media collages share the space with intricate botanical pieces and bold landscapes painted en plein air.

Many of the more than thirty works have been previously exhibited at The Morton Arboretum and some will be making their Guild exhibit debut at the library.

The exhibit will be open to Downers Grove Library visitors through January 28, 2024 during normal library hours.

Farewell to 2023 from the Nature Artists’ Guild

Nature Artists’ Guild’s Annual Celebration Tomorrow!

Creative Cards to Share Some Cheer

A cup of hot cocoa, some holiday music, maybe even a crackling fire (in the fireplace or on a screen) and a few art supplies. What better way to spend an hour or two during the holiday season?

The Nature Artists’ Guild invites all of its members to take some time during this busy season to share their creativity and brighten the day of a fellow artist. The annual Holiday Card Exchange has become a popular Guild tradition, and all that’s required to participate is some paper, an envelope and stamp, and some basic art supplies.

The last day to register for the Holiday Card Exchange is Thursday, December 7, 2023. Members can register online here, by emailing Celia Rodee, or in person at the Holiday Party. On December 8, Celia will email each participant the name and address of their card’s recipient. All cards should be mailed by December 16.

The Nature Artists’ Guild guidelines are somewhat relaxed for this project, but the cards should be original and handmade. Many members photograph or scan their cards before sending and have copies printed to use as their personal greeting cards for friends and family.

Blank multi-media cards and envelopes will be available at the Holiday Party for those who prefer to use them.
Participants are invited to send a photo or scan of the cards they send and receive to Denise Fisk to share later on this website.

The Nature Artists’ Guild Begins Celebrating the Season

It won’t be long until members of the Nature Artists’ Guild begin celebrating the season at their annual Holiday Party.

On Thursday evening, December 7, 2023, members are invited to share food, fun, and laughter with their fellow artists from 6 to 9 at the Thornhill Education Center of The Morton Arboretum.

Attendees can look forward to the lovely atmosphere of the Arbor Room decorated by volunteers, live music and appetizers in the historic Founder’s Room, a variety of food contributed by members, a raffle of art and nature items, and the delightful company of fellow artists.

Members of the Nature Artists’ Guild were emailed an invitation earlier this month with all the details.

Tickets for the raffle will be available at the party by cash or check only.
Blank greeting cards will also be available at the party for those who would like to use one for the Guild’s newest tradition, the annual Holiday Card Exchange.

A Peek at December for the Nature Artists’ Guild

The Nature Artists’ Guild has a busy December ahead, with a party, handmade cards, and the beginning of an exhibit. Here is a quick look –

Guild members are invited to attend the annual Holiday Party at the Thornhill Education Center of The Morton Arboretum on the evening of December 7, 2023. Members were recently emailed an invitation with all the details. (Reminder – tickets for the raffle will be available by cash or check only.) Volunteers are already hard at work making preparations for a lovely and enjoyable event!

December 7, 2023 will also be the last day for Nature Artists’ Guild members to register to participate in the fun and creative annual tradition of exchanging a handmade holiday card with a fellow artist. Details were emailed earlier this week, and members can complete this form to sign up. For those participants who would like to use them, blank white cards will be available, free of charge, at the Holiday Party. Here is a sample of the cards created for last year’s exchange.

December 11, 2023 will be the final date to register for the January 2024 Downers Grove Public Library exhibit. The artwork drop-off will be on December 16 and pick-up will be on February 3, 2024. Interested artists must join the Nature Artists’ Guild by December 11 or renew their membership by December 16, 2023 to participate. Artwork must have either been previously included in a Nature Artists’ Guild exhibit, or be approved by photo per instructions on the prospectus. Click here for general Guild exhibit guidelines. (Special exhibits may have further instructions outlined in the prospectus.) The exhibit prospectus will be emailed soon to all current members, and to new members after joining.

The Nature Artists’ Guild is currently accepting new and renewing memberships for 2024. To be sure to receive all the benefits of membership for the entire year, artists can join or renew by December 31, 2023.

A little bird told us that the 2023 Autumn Nature Art Exhibit at The Morton Arboretum, featuring over 200 works of art by more than 60 members of the Guild, was a resounding success (with a little help from the beautiful autumn weather). The Nature Artists’ Guild would like to thank the exhibit coordinators, participating artists, volunteers, demonstrators, Arboretum employees, and visitors who helped to make it so.
